The Independent Church of India (ICI) successfully convened its 76th Annual General Assembly from December 3–7, 2025, in Khawlian, Mizoram, marking a significant return to the location after more than six decades. The gathering drew over 500 attendees and featured important leadership transitions and spiritual celebrations.
A Historic Return
The assembly held special significance as it marked the first time the General Assembly convened in Khawlian since the 11th session on February 23–24, 1961—a gap of 64 years, 9 months, and 9 days. That earlier assembly had passed 18 resolutions, setting a historical precedent for the church’s governance.
Key Sessions and Leadership
The five-day event encompassed several critical gatherings, including the Annual Session of the Assembly Musical Board, the 174th and 175th Executive Council Meetings, and the 76th General Assembly session itself. Council and assembly sessions were held at Khawlian ICI Church, while public worship services took place at the Khawlian Auditorium.
Distinguished speakers included Rev. Lalneikhup Hmar (Executive Secretary), Rev. Dr. James R. Ruolngul (Secretary, Finance & Education), Rev. Lalrohlu (Secretary, Ministries), Rev. H.P. Runremthang (Evangelist-at-Large), and Elder V.L. Renga Hriler (Chairman, Central Kristien Ṭhalai Pawl/Youth Department).
Leadership Transition
In accordance with ICI tradition, new leadership was installed during the assembly. Elder Dr. H.L. Liensang was named the new Moderator, with Rev. B.L. Sandam elected as Vice Moderator. The ICI follows a succession system where the Vice Moderator elected at each General Assembly subsequently assumes the role of Moderator.
Ordinations and Retirements
Sunday’s proceedings featured a combined Pension and Ordination Service, honoring both retiring and newly commissioned church leaders. Five members were recognized for their years of service: Rev. Vanlalruot Joute, Rev. Lalronghak Songate, Mr. Zothantluanga, Elder Lalmanlien, and Rev. Jonathan Infimate.
Four new pastors were ordained into ministry: Pastor Robert Lalhmudik, Pastor Stephen D. Sinate, Pastor Matthew Lalramlien, Pastor Immanuel Zairemtluong, and Pastor Samuel L. Khawbung. Rev. J. Thanglur served as the ordaining minister. The service was followed by a special feast celebrating both the retirees and newly ordained ministers.
Worship and Fellowship
Public worship services ran from Thursday evening through Sunday night, providing opportunities for spiritual renewal and community fellowship among the large gathering. Presbytery Choirs from Serlui, Aizawl, Hmarphei and Tuivai Presbyteries and the ICI Central Choir presented their songs. The combination of administrative sessions, worship services, and ceremonial occasions reflected the comprehensive nature of the ICI’s annual gathering, addressing both the organizational needs and spiritual life of the denomination.
